ABOUT DEER RUN
Deer Run Associates provides top-notch Information Technology and
Security consulting services to select clients
across the United States, and throughout the world. Hal
Pomeranz, Deer Run's founder and technical lead, is a recognized
leader and a respected author and instructor in the fields of Systems
Management and Information Security. Deer Run Associates was founded
in 1997.

Our Team Hal Pomeranz
Hal Pomeranz is the founder and technical lead of Deer Run Associates,
and has been active in the system and network management/security
field for over fifteen years. As a member of the Faculty for the SANS
Institute, Hal developed the SANS "Step-by-Step" course model and
currently serves as the track coordinator and primary instructor for
the SANS/GIAC Unix Security Certification track (GCUX). Hal is also
the technical lead in developing the Unix Security Benchmark documents
for the Center for Internet Security. In addition, Hal is currently the
Technical Editor for Sys Admin magazine. In 2001 he was given the SAGE
Outstanding Achievement Award for his teaching and leadership in the
field of System Administration.
Prior to founding Deer Run Associates, Hal has held Network and
Systems Management positions at some of the largest commercial
(AT&T Bell Labs, TRW Information Systems, Cendant Corp),
government (NASA Ames Research Center), and educational (University of
Pennsylvania) institutions in the country. Hal has been a member of the
Board of Directors for the USENIX Association, BayLISA, and BBLISA.
He has written or co-written dozens of technical articles and several books,
including Solaris Security: Step-by-Step, the de facto
standard guide for "hardening" the Solaris Operating System, and
SANS Security Essentials.
Laura LeHew is the president and CFO of Deer Run Associates, and has
been active in the high tech industry for over twenty years.
She is currently a member of the Eugene Chamber of Commerce and
has previously served on the Board of Directors for several professional organizations.
Her writing has appeared or is forthcoming in such journals as Denali, PMS, Tiger's Eye,
Not Just Air, Pemmican Press, Carnelian, Pearl MagazineThe Register Guard, Elysian Fields Quarterly, The Rattlesnake Review,
The San Francisco Reader and The Peralta Press. She received a writing residency
from Soapstone in 2006. "Doing the AWP" received the new poet's prize from
Oregon State Poetry Association in 2005. Laura interned for CALYX, an independent
publisher of literature and art by women. She is currently a member of the Lane Literary Guild's
steering committee, the Eugene/Springfield chapter of the
Oregon State Poetry Association, and is co-founder of Uttered Chaos,
which organizes readings in the Eugene area.
Laura runs two critique groups, a book group, and is webmaster for numerous writers and literary organizations.
Prior to Deer Run Associates, Laura has held a variety of positions
for companies in the Bay Area such as Ascend Communications, Esker
Inc., Netopia (formerly Farallon Computing), and Sybase. Additionally,
she was a principal at Plus Five Computer Services.
Laura holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from the California College of Arts and
a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies from Holy
Names College. She also holds a Certificate of Human Resources Management from the
University of California, Berkeley.
